Photography class?

So today I was exploring a few things on my camera and taking some new photos of Austin....my loyal and oh-so-cute subject. After taking the pics and uploading them I realized that the background is too clear. (notice the outlet in the last photo) I would like the photo to only be focused on his face and what is in the foreground. I know there are so many things I can do with Photoshop Elements, but even after trying several searches and spending a little time tinkering around with things, I couldn't figure it out. So, I think I need to take a class. My Dad is really into photography and has a fancy SLR camera, and after asking around to friends and family, I think that will be my next step as far as the actual camera goes. It's so hard to get photos of little ones at the right time with a point and shoot. I'm sure many of you can relate. When you finally get that smile, you need to take the shot NOW!! Anyway, I think I would really enjoy learning more about digital photography and Photoshop Elements. Who knows...maybe it could even turn into something more than a hobby? Ok, so my question to you all is...does anyone know of a good Photoshop Elements class in the area, or maybe a digital photography class? Or just a general question..."how did those of you who are more into photography get your start?" Anyone? Buhler?....Buhler? I'd love to get some advice or recommendations. I'm thinking maybe a class at CCCC (community college here) might be good...not sure.

So leave me a comment if you have any words of wisdom. Just click on "comments" just below this post and it will guide you the rest of the way. I tried to adjust my settings so you don't have to have a Blogger account to make a comment. Hopefully that will make things more easy.
Thanks a bunch and happy Sunday afternoon!

Taryn,

The reason you can't get just Austin in focus and not the backgrnd is b/c the newer digital cameras are made ot have "wide focus" areas. So, it is not anything you are doing "wrong", it sounds like your camera. I have the same problem with mine. My sister Beth got an awesome digital camera, but it works more like a manual one where you move the lens itself to focus in and out, etc. Cost about $500 or so? Hope this helps. I am a photoshop GEEK b/c of my work.
